Owning a vacation rental takes a lot of work and is a huge responsibility. Of course, a homeowner/landlord wants to maintain an investment and be able to rent their income property out, but you also want guests to enjoy the home that we’ve put so much work into. There’s a long list of things to do to make sure your home stays ready for the season and welcomes all of your guests, without any unwanted visitors.
I feel like there are plenty of lists to help you prepare your summer rental, but many of them gloss over or don’t address the problem of bed bugs in-depth enough. Honestly, no one likes to talk about this topic because it can be a summer rental catastrophe to find out this pest exists in your home. I think there’s a stigma around it and people don’t realize that one hitchhiker with a guest in their luggage or personal belongings can cause you a headache.
We learned the hard way that this problem can quickly become a problem that can cost thousands, and there are plenty of people willing to take advantage of you with high-cost treatments. It’s important to know your stuff in order to keep your rental property bed-bug-free.
What we learned about prevention:
Know the myths / facts – Learn where they hide and how they can transport. Having them doesn’t mean your home is dirty or unkempt – just be sure to prevent and treat.
Mattress covers are key – but won’t prevent them from hiding elsewhere. Don’t forget about couches, chairs, anything upholstered.
Preventative checks – Put the investment in to have the home inspected. In our personal experience, we found a trusted company that has a bed-bug sniffing dog. The dog alerts if and exactly where they find the presence of bed bugs. Our contact uses two dogs to confirm locations. This is worth every penny to do routine checks to ensure your home is protected. If you have a property manager, they can help you coordinate or advise on best practices for how often routine services should be performed.
What to do if you discover the problem? These Hot Shot® brand products are amazing in that they put the control back with the homeowners. When I discovered these Hot Shot® brand products, and how easy they were for me to order on HomeDepot.com, I knew it was a game-changer. We combine these products with preventative checks to ensure our rental stays free from unwanted guests.
The Hot Shot® Bed Bug & Flea Fogger kills bed bugs, fleas, lice, ticks and other listed insects. The Hot Shot® Bed Bug Killer Aerosol is a handheld spray that is used in cracks and crevices in bed frames and box springs. It may also be used to kill fleas and ticks. It is non-staining and has no unpleasant odor. It kills by contact – so you simply spray the target area.
Adding these products to your arsenal of homeowner prevention tools is a simple and effective way to keep your home ready for the season. Keep the focus on the good of your home — so that your guests remember the amazing trip they had vs. any nuisances, like home pests.
You can add these Hot Shot® products to your cart, in-store or online on your next trip to Home Depot. You can also find them at Walmart and Dollar General.
