It hasn’t been long since the school year started. The school-year routine was much-needed after a long, but fun, summer vacation. Routine is important to my family – my kids just do best when they have a solid schedule or routine. After a long time of focusing on our morning routine, I realized this year that an after-school routine as much needed. I’m working full-time and my kids come home before my workday is done. So, I decided to mimic the mornings with a checklist to get them in some good after-school habits.

Click the image above or click HERE to download your own copy! Fill-in as it suits your kids or varies week to week.

One thing that never changes on our after-school checklist is snack and reading. My kids don’t get a ton of written homework, but reading every day is one assignment. And obviously a good snack after a long day is much-needed!

Some other ideas for after-school checklists include:

  • Unpacking backpack
  • Cleaning out lunchbox
  • Assign an afternoon chore or task around the house (but clean clothes away, feed dog or pick up/clean up, head start on setting the table for dinner, etc)
  • Written homework completion
  • Reading

We love to combine snack-time with reading and one of our favorite, once-in-a-while treats are Dewey’s Bakery Soft Baked Cookies.

There’s something about these cookies, especially warm cookies, that takes us all back. Tip: You can heat Dewey’s Bakery Soft Baked Cookies and they pass for a fresh from the oven, homemade cookie.

When I tell you these are good….I mean they are GOOD. These soft, chewy cookies have bakery-inspired flavors like no other cookie you’ve ever tasted. Every single bite captures the magic of a classic Southern bakery treat. And Dewey’s Bakery knows a thing or two about that! A family-owned business, they’ve operated in N.C. since 1930! They are one of those companies that evokes the romantic South, with values like friendliness, hospitality and sharing. And they give back to their community!

I love that these cookies combine classic flavors with clean ingredients – real, simple, ingredients, free from all the fake stuff. I can feel good about this treat for my kids – not worrying that they’re having something filled with ingredients I don’t like!

No matter where you are, these cookies just inspire you to share, slow down and enjoy the moment.

Homework is made easier with these cookies – a sweet treat to help the task go a little faster! And reading is more enjoyable with a little treat to go with a good story!
