In this fast-paced, digital world we live in, it can be easy to lose sight of the little moments. Kids grow up fast and the little moments matter. I am thankful for how much technology there is — at my fingertips, I can see my twin girls on my phone in pictures from birth to now. It’s amazing to be able to have so much at our fingertips, but it’s what we do with it that matters. As I watch my girls get bigger, I’m more focused on creating memories and cherishing each moment.
For the holidays, we asked for less toys and more experience gifts. As a result, we were able to enjoy things together, like pottery painting, roller skating and even a trip to the spa! Slowing down every now and then is important and it can be all about the simple things.
Create Simple Moments: Milk & Cookies with Books
My girls love reading and I knew if I created a cozy nook with a canopy for reading, they’d love it!
Add in some milk and cookies – and it’s an instant memory. A fun afternoon that lasted hours for them. They started out reading, having milk and cookies, playing and hanging out in their new reading nook for HOURS. Occupied kids, without technology!
At the center of it was a simple hanging canopy (see below for how simple!) and an easy snack of milk and cookies.
Milk & Cookies with Books | Reading Nook
Here’s what you need to create a reading nook like we did!
- hanging canopy / or any tent
- pillows, blankets
- small table
- books, books, books!
- string lights for fun!
- cookies (or any other snack!)
There’s just something comforting about that! Real dairy milk has long been at the center of everything – a part of the happy moments that really matter in our lives. Here are some fun facts: A new AI-fueled image recognition study found that milk was, in fact, one of the most shared foods on Instagram. One in every four food posts included milk. Added to that, posts with milk were happier than non-milk posts, meaning milk does more than what most people realize! As a parent, I know that milk gives kids nutrients as they grow, but it’s also a part of the moments that make us happy. Like this afternoon with milk, cookies, books, and a reading nook!

BEHIND THE SCENES
Talking about real moments, I sometimes get asked if the way things photograph is very ‘real’ or something that can be attained easily, without staging. All we did for this post was use a fun hanging canopy in their room, some pillows, a battery operated string of heart lights, books, cookies and, of course, some nice cold milk! My girls truly had a great time hanging out in their reading nook all afternoon. I hope this inspires you to create a small moment with simple things!
Tip: If you’re not sure you want to keep this up permanently, use a wall-paint safe, removable hook to hang! It was sturdy enough to stay up as long as we liked, but I didn’t have to put a hook in the ceiling! Bring in a small table, blankets, or pillows to make it more fun!
