It’s been seven years since we moved into our home. We welcomed twins not long after, so our progress on the home was slow to start. When we did start making changes, we renovated the kitchen and living spaces. I did all of the kids’ rooms when they made the transition from a nursery to a ‘big kid’ room. And while our master bedroom is painted and fully furnished, I never got around to putting those finishing touches on it. Every time I thought to do something with the space, it seemed like there was another project more important. As moms tend to do – I put my myself & my room last!
Now that I’m ready to finish the room, I’m looking to make the space a place I can relax and spend time. I decided to see how far I could stretch a small budget focusing first on adding an armchair and ottoman, throw, new bedding elements and some blue & white decor. Later, I’ll tackle new lighting, window treatments and we want to take out the carpeting and put down hardwood floors like the rest of the house.
I was happy with what I was able to do with a small budget – and look forward to finishing the space. Here are some of my tips for a quick bedroom update:
REPURPOSE & ADD ONTO EXISTING PIECES
Don’t be afraid to move furniture or decor from one room to another. Take a chair or rug that isn’t working in one space and move it to another. Build on classic or plain elements. For example, my bedding is all white and a good quality duvet, comforter and coverlet. I like the look of the crisp white because it’s easy to build upon and add other elements, like throw pillows or area rugs.
Since we have yet to replace the carpeting and put down hardwood, I pulled this rug from another space to give the room a different look and break up the wall-to-wall carpeting.
Decide what mood you want the room to have. What colors do you want to use? What look, feel and style do you want the room to have? Have a plan and play around with different elements. I decided to go with blue and white.
One way to get inspired is with scent. The Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ is amazing and helped inspire my bedroom refresh. My room redesign wasn’t complete without Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Fragrance Mist No.2 Bright™ and No.3 Free™ fragrances. It added the finishing touch on my new space, with light layered scents.
These are not your traditional room fragrances. Not even close. They are very much like high-end room sprays but without the high price tag! When you fill your space with Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Fragrance Mist products made with light, premium fragrances infused with essential oils, you’ll be able to set the mood that helps make your space a reflection of who you are.
No.2 Bright™ fragrance –A touch of ripe raspberries and orchard fruit notes mingle with jasmine, rose and sweet pea over a pillowy bed of powder musk, sweet Tonka bean and sheer blonde woods scents.
No.3 Free™ fragrance -Notes of white pineapple, citrus and beachside florals swirl through layers of coconut, beach woods and vanilla bean scents.
BUILD YOUR BED
A bed looks more inviting to me when it has great bedding. Invest in a great comforter, duvet and coverlet. The weave design of this one adds texture.
Adding new pillows to the bed can be a great way to play with colors and change the look of the room easily. I love the blue/white and combination of patterns of these pillows I chose.
I like the pillows both ways (above and below) and it’s an inexpensive way to change the look of the room from time to time.
Whether it’s a bench at the end of your bed or an armchair with ottoman, adding seating to your bedroom goes a long way. The space is transformed into a place you can truly spend time — not just when sleeping.
THE SMALL THINGS
Add small things, like a tray to keep everything at your fingertips while you curl up with a book and tea.
These ceramic spheres just make me happy and fit the color scheme.
MAKE IT COZY
Add a throw blanket, pillow and extra blanket for the end of the bed. Fresh flowers and a vase tie it all together.
