I’ve never been a huge morning person. I like to hit the snooze button one too many times and I’m usually not a happy camper in the AM. So, it surprised me when a lifestyle change to wake early in the morning ended up being just what I needed. With three young kids, I don’t often have a lot of time during the day. Between my kids and work, I was struggling to find the balance of time for myself. I was falling asleep early and waking up without enough time to plan my day.
A new routine was what I needed. Better mornings meant more productivity and better energy in my day. Overall better well-being.
My mornings now involve me getting up early – before my kids get up. I’m not gonna lie, this is a hard habit to start. But once you start it, you’ll find your internal clock gets used to it. And the reward of that quiet time in the morning is pretty nice. In addition to a morning walk, I have other simple steps that make for a better morning:
Simple Step 1: Morning Walk/Jog – Exercise
I usually walk the dog during this time and sometimes head somewhere more “inspiring” than just the regular neighborhood walk (although that is fine, too). It’s usually more than just a walk, especially when I visit my favorite spot – an arboretum near my home.
I used to run the trails here when I was much younger and life was a lot different and less busy. I sometimes feel that same energy in the familiarity of those trails and it’s a good feeling! I also happened to have my wedding photos done here, too, so it’s a great place for a good walk.
Often, when I return, I still have some time before the kids wake so I can prepare the day. I spend time the night before packing lunches, laying out clothes and packing bags. In the AM, I can then focus on getting a good breakfast.
Simple Step 2: Taking the Time to Eat Breakfast
If I start my day with a good breakfast, my eating follows suit for the duration of the day. Tea, and a good breakfast, like these favorite coconut/mango quick oats, help make breakfast delicious and easy to make-ahead.
Simple Step 3: Commit to Healthy Practices
When I wake, I start the day with a big glass of water. After breakfast, I have another and take any vitamins or supplements. Before, I was forgetting to take them with my busy day. Now, it’s a part of my morning routine. One thing I always make sure I take is a daily probiotic. Probiotics are “good” bacteria that naturally exist in cultured or fermented foods (like yogurt or certain cheeses). They offer benefits to your digestive system. They are a great way to increase the intake of “good” bacteria and support digestive balance and healthy gut flora.†

I take Nature Made® Advanced Dual Action Probiotics, available at Walmart.
The Advanced Dual Action Probiotic comprises of 2 probiotic strains, Bifidobacterium lactis (large intestine) and
Lactobacillus plantarum (small intestine). The Nature Made Advanced Dual Action strains have been scientifically studied, so you can feel confident that it will provide the digestive support your system needs.†
Simple Step 4: Take a Moment to Plan the Day
Create a simple to-do list or organize your tasks by priority. Gather the necessary tasks for the day (i.e. items for errands, materials for work, etc).
What do you do to start your day? What healthy living habits do you start your day with?
