Ideas for Inexpensive & Fun Family Getaways

Mar 10, 2017 Stephanie

Vacationing and activities with a large family means shelling out more money for just about everything – hotels, rentals, food, activities and more. Being smart about planning fun trips or activities without breaking the bank is essential. But just because you are a on a budget or want to keep the sticker shock to a minimum doesn’t mean you need to skip the family vacation.  This year, we’re skipping our big, week- long family vacation and trading it in for smaller trips, weekend getaways, staycations and activities.

Ideas for Inexpensive & Fun Family Getaways

Beach Day or Weekend

If the beach is part of your typical family vacation, opt for a beach day or just stay overnight. Find a beach less-traveled or try to schedule a getaway during the week when things are less crowded.

Shorter Trips

As mentioned above, you can shorten a trip or just do a few nights. That also goes for other favorite destinations. If you’re willing to drive and spend a short amount of time, it can be a good option. We love Cape Cod, but the price of our rental is not in the budget this year.

Our rental last year. Choosing a few nights vs. a full week can save you a ton of money.

We’ll probably return again for our typical week in 2018, but this year, we’re opting for a shorter trip to New England – a couple of nights vs. the pricey full-week.

Deal directly with owners of rentals and look for mid-week deals at the last minute. Sometimes, rentals will have a few days that haven’t been booked and the owner will be happy to reduce the rate to at least rent it out.

Local History & Culture

Stay close to home but visit those points of interest in your own backyard. We live super-close to many historical, revolutionary era points of interest — yet, we have never visited them with our children.

Historical points of interest in Morristown, NJ – right in our own backyard.

We’re always so focused on vacation planning that we haven’t exposed our children to the things that are close to home. Think museums, historical attractions and cultural events/fairs.

Amusement Parks & Attractions

Look into smaller amusement parks or ones that more local to you. A day or two at a smaller-scale park can be just as fun. Many of these parks have water-attractions, lodging and shows. Plan well and it can be a great weekend getaway.

Hershey Park, PA. For us, this is a reasonable day or weekend trip!

If you plan well, you can create all those same family memories without spending so much. No matter what we plan, we loving using our American Express card. We love the perks that come with it, including great cash-back. It makes it our go-to card for just about everything our family does. If you are looking for a credit card that is a good match for your lifestyle, you can visit CreditCards.com, specifically the CardMatch tool to find the perfect credit card. CreditCards.com believes in empowering people to use the right cards in the right way
