Traveling While Sick: 7 Tips To Feel Better

Nov 14, 2016 Stephanie

7-travel-tips

Cold symptoms always seem to strike at the worst possible time – like right before a big meeting or presentation, a wedding, event or before traveling. Have you ever traveled while  sick? It’s terrible. It’s uncomfortable and you just want to be home in your own bed.

Last month, I finally had the opportunity to get away for a girls’ weekend.  I had a stay at a nice hotel, a spa day and nice dinners to look forward to.  I was counting down the days to a kid, housework, blogging and work-free weekend! And then it hit…a cold with all the classic symptoms.  Symptoms that could ruin my weekend if I let them.

Thankfully, as a mom to 3,  a busy blogger, social media consultant and campaign leader, I am used to #NoSickDays. I just can’t afford to miss out on work and in that weekend’s case…enjoying life! Life is about enjoying every moment and embracing the adventure and work that each day brings. So I’m thankful NyQuil relieves my cough & cold symptoms for a great night’s sleep to allow me to keep my edge.

I’ve been able to get a solid night’s sleep despite these cold symptoms. Thanks to NyQuil I’ll be able to take a trip in the morning.

Here are some tips that have worked for me when I’ve had to travel sick. Clearly, you should always use common sense and if you have a high fever you shouldn’t get on a plane or drive. But, for other pesky cold symptoms, these tips will leave you feeling better and prepared!

Relax

When you sense that you are getting sick, don’t stress. I know the idea of traveling with cold symptoms is enough to make anyone stressed, but the more anxious you become, the more likely you’ll be to ‘feel’ your symptoms. The stress can even make it worse!

Prepare Everything

Flight in the morning? Long drive ahead? Got a train to catch? Don’t count on getting up early to prepare. Spend time ahead of time (little by little) to pack all your bags. Lay out comfortable travel clothes and be sure you have all important documents.

Get Lots of Rest

Get to bed early, especially the night before you are traveling. Worried about your symptoms keeping you up? NyQuil helps alleviate your cold symptoms so you can feel rested for your unmissable moments the next day.  Every memorable moment in your life is one you don’t want to skip due to a sick day. Remember, NyQuil is the nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, fever, best sleep with a cold medicine.

It may not look pretty – but a full, deep sleep before a day travel was just what I needed. Thanks to NyQuil, there was #NoSickDays and I didn’t have to miss the fun of a girls’ weekend

Drink Lots of Water and Hot Tea

Not a lot of explanation is needed here!

Comfort and Relief

Be sure to have the items with you that help you feel more comfortable. (Your own tissues vs. scratchy tissues you might find in a hotel or airport.) You might consider saline spray or drops to help minimize congestion. Bring your favorite lozenges to help with a scratchy or sore throat.

Hot Showers/ Bath

This may seem simple, but the hot steam can bring you some big relief. Take a hot shower/bath before leaving.

Essential Oils

If you use essential oils and have a travel diffuser (highly suggest!) You can try oils like lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, thyme and peppermint. I use these either for aromatherapy or as a topical application behind the ears or on the neck.

How do you make sure you don’t miss you life’s unmissable moments when sick?  What moments are most important to you?
