DIY Football Rag Banner & Themed Cake

Nov 04, 2016 Stephanie

Make your next game day party more festive with this easy tutorial for a football rag banner and see how we made our football party more yummy with a themed cake! This post is sponsored by I Love Ice Cream Cakes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

With football season in full swing, I thought I’d share a fun idea for an easy rag banner that you can use all season long.  You can use this for tailgating, game day parties or football theme birthday parties.  It’s a simple, fun, inexpensive decoration.

This banner goes perfectly with our favorite ice cream cake — the Carvel® Game Ball® Ice Cream Cake. This cake puts the best part of the ice cream cake (those chocolate crunchies that EVERYONE loves) all over the outside of the cake and inside. It doesn’t get much better than that!

This cake looks great as the centerpiece of your next football party spread.

To make this simple decoration to go along with this yummy treat, I used fabric colors that I felt best fit a general football theme (solid green, grey/black chevron, brown) and cut them into 18 inch long (to hang about 9 inches), 1 inch wide strips.  You can estimate that each strip will take up a little less than an inch. So, if you are making a 60″ banner you will want enough fabric to make 80-90 1″ wide strips, and so on. You can also use colors that represent your team or event!

In addition to the fabric, you’ll need:

Twine

Burlap

Brown and White Felt

Determine how long you want your banner to be and cut your twine. On the burlap, you can put a team logo, but I opted to freehand a football with the felt. I’ll probably replace this with our football team’s logo eventually. Easy Peasy!

Take your twine and tie it between two chairs so you can work easier. Then you’ll find the center to hot glue on your burlap. Fold the burlap over the twine, with hot glue under. Then, you can start tying and filling in the fabric as you go. It goes pretty quickly once you get the hang of tying.  Note: I did opt to stitch the ends of my burlap to keep from fraying, but you do not need to.

As you tie the fabric remember to keep pushing the pieces together so you create a nice, full, banner.

You can create this banner with any fabric, for any occasion. Looking to host a football party? You can find where to buy the Carvel® Game Ball® Ice Cream Cake using the product locator on the page HERE.
