My son loves all things camping and outdoors – being around the campfire, smores and sleeping in a tent. So, it came as no surprise that he wanted a campout birthday party. I was happy when he was okay with a sleepover in the backyard – camping style – instead of the real deal. There’s a lot I do for my kids, but camping in the woods just isn’t this mamma’s thing. To make his backyard campout a reality, I picked up some essentials at Walmart. Everything from the tents, to birthday cards, supplies for S’Mores, favor bags and more.
I decided on s’mores for the favor and with American Greetings supplies, it was an easy and simple diy project.
To make, you’ll need:
Marshmallows (the flat kind work best)
Chocolate Bar
Graham Crackers
American Greetings Cellophane, Tissue Paper and Gift Bags (the ones without the handles are fine).
I also printed up a cute label with ‘S’More Fun’ (get yours here)
Simply stack your s’mores ingredients — I like to use a cardboard disc at the bottom to help everything sit nicely.
I put the package of s’mores into a larger bag with some tissue paper (so little hands didn’t cause anything to melt) and also included some other little camping themed gifts (i.e. a whistle, play compass, trail mix, and scavenger hunt game).
With my son turning 7 – I also picked up a birthday card for him. He already got a new bike, but I wanted to be able to give him something at his actual party. We put a few gift cards in his card to some local places he likes – the toy store, arcade and ice cream shop. Since he’s a fluent reader, I have loved being able to write him messages in his birthday cards and hearing him read them.
Cards can convey the best messages; written words sometimes meaning more than the best tangible gifts. While he loves his new bike, I also hope that he learns to treasure cards and messages from his parents and family.
If you’re looking for cards that convey just about any message you’re looking for, look no further than American Greetings birthday cards. I can always find the message I want to convey. I even picked up a few more for some summer birthdays we have coming up for friends/family.
At Walmart, there’s such a huge selection of any kind of card you could want. The entire American Greetings section has everything you need for gifts, parties and cards for any occasion
How it Came Together
There are no kids present because we want to surprise him with the set-up. I had to work quickly on this day while he was at camp. We have tents for each of his 3 friends he has invited and the faux fire will be replaced by a safe campfire manned by Dad.
It was good to do a dry run, as it gave me some more ideas for some things we needed.
We’re excited for him to have his campout and hope he’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed planning it!

What a great birthday party idea! I love the tent and “fire”! It really is so special to be able to hear our kids read the messages in the cards we give them! I hope he had a wonderful birthday!
Thanks, Alaina! You’re too sweet. It was certainly fun to set up for him!
