Keeping Your Home Child-Safe & Checklist

keeping your home safe (1)

Most parents know about safe guarding their homes for on-the-move babies, toddlers and small children.  We lock cabinets, cover outlets and keep cleaning chemicals out of reach. There are several hidden dangers in a home that may still pose a risk. Take a look at the information below to make sure your home is truly safe for your children. It is important to be mindful of guests or babysitters that may unknowingly bring these items into your home and place within reach of your  child:

Button Batteries

The problem with these is that you may not realize they are present until something opens up and a child has access – a watch, a remote control, hearing aids. They aren’t just a choking hazard but can open up and cause internal damage.

Hard Candy

You might have some in your own purse or bag – or maybe a babysitter, grandma or grandpa comes over – and a hard candy can be enticing for a young child to eat. Unfortunately, they pose a choking hazard. Make sure your guests or babysitters place their bags out of reach and are mindful to leave certain items at home just in case.

Dishwasher / Laundry Pods

These little pacs are so enticing to kids, even slightly older children. They might seem less harmless and cause some people to leave the package out in a laundry room within reach. These pacs can contain harmful chemicals and concentrated detergents. Be sure they are out of reach.

Prescription Drugs

Do not assume that because it is child proof that it can be left out. Any type of drug or vitamin should be placed out of reach and guests’ bags should be, as well. Ask grandparents and babysitters to be aware of these things, as well.

Tipping Furniture/ Falling Television Sets

Kids climb and an unsecured television set, computer, piece of furniture can cause injury or even death. Make sure all large pieces are securely anchored and furniture pieces are anchored to the wall. Most, if not all, pieces of new furniture you buy will come with anchors. If not or you are buying used furniture, ask or visit your local home improvement store. It can be as easy as a few brackets to secure furniture to the wall.

Window Coverings

Window Shades

Corded window coverings is one of those everyday items that can pose a threat that is completely preventable. These aren’t just a risk in children’s rooms, but all over your home – in every room.

SelectBlinds.com wants your children safe. Through the #GoCordless Movement, SelectBlinds.com aims to educate and empower families to have homes that are 100 percent kid and pet safe by using cordless window coverings.  When we re-did our kitchen and family room, I had to specifically request Cordless shades and felt that it was a bigger deal – and almost easier and less expensive to get the regular shades. What I love about the #GoCordless Movement is that is helping people to more easily upgrade their homes to be 100 percent cordless. Without a hassle.

In fact, on March 31, 2016, SelectBlinds.com became the first custom window covering provider to go 100 percent cordless. The leading online retailer is encouraging families to join the #GoCordless movement to prevent needless death and injuries for young children and pets from window covering cord strangulation.
