In the past few months, we have completed a few mini-projects on our home. One of my favorite projects was installing wainscoting in our living room, along with fresh paint, new furniture and fixtures. It came together beautifully, except for the fact that the space was undecorated. The drab and boring space had been bothering me for a while; however, there was no budget leftover after our renovation. I knew I had to add in style at a value and that meant heading to Big Lots.
Why? Because I knew if I could find everything at Big Lots, it would also make this a one-day makeover.
The space is boring and lacks color, design and decor. The window treatments are drab and just blend in with the couch. I’m picky with my home decor and I definitely had a vision in mind for this space that included more color. I knew Big Lots would help me get there with a wide array of home decor options at an unbeatable value.
Tip: Before heading out for your shopping trip, spend some time in the space. Make a detailed list or plan for your vision. You can even sketch out a design that includes basic style, shape and color ideas. This will help you immensely while you are shopping! Bring any swatches, color samples or a picture to help with selections.
I had no trouble finding what I needed at Big Lots. With my list in hand, I was able to buy everything to finish the space. There was an incredible selection of home decor options – from pillows, to rugs and window treatments. While styles and assortment will vary by store, the wide range of options allows you to decorate just about any room!
So, how did I do on my shopping trip?
I ended up purchasing the following for my space :
Decorative Hurricane Lantern
2 Decorative Lanterns
2 Pairs of Throw Pillows
Putting it All Together
This is how the space came together, and I’m pretty happy about it.
The new pillows on the couch really bring in the color. At value like this, I can switch them out at different times of year to change the mood of the room.
Tip: Use things you already have to fill in the gaps. Shop other rooms. For example, I pulled the throw from another room and worked in some seasonal items, as shown below. You can also use simple things to make a big impact. I used a wall-hanger I had in the basement to hang this glass lantern. It adds a nice element to the room. I had purchased two, and then displayed the other on the coffee table with some seasonal items I already had. As for the window treatments, I decided to pull in a color from the throw pillow. I had been wanting a color on the windows, and these panels are perfect. Tip: Curtain rings dress up any window treatment and you can use them on just about any type of window treatment. For example, these panels were a grommet top, but since the bottoms are concealed by the couch, I just flipped them upside down. I love the way the curtain rings makes it seem a little more formal. The wall mirrors bring in more light and design with the ornate borders. Finally, I added some design to my side table with an ornate hurricane lamp and picture frame. Overall, it took one shopping trip to Big Lots and I was able to transform this space from drab to fab in one day, at an amazing value. The staff at Big Lots is so helpful! In almost every section someone asked if I needed some help. Being on the short side, I almost always do need some help in reaching items on top shelves! Much appreciated!
