Potty training is a process – and it’s different for every child. I see that even more with my three year old twins. The girls did well with daytime potty training but still need a little more support with nighttime. And that’s okay. Nighttime potty training can be difficult, in part, because some kids may not be ready. Nighttime wetting isn’t something a child can control and kids may vary in age as to when it resolves. The best thing you can do is to build confidence and set them up for success. Here are some of the ways we’re working with our girls to do just that:
Big Kid Room
If possible, you can introduce nighttime training around the same time as a new bedroom or bed. Don’t overfocus on needing to stay dry at night, but instead focus on the change of a new bedroom and growing up. The key is to continue to build confidence and feeling grown up.
My daughters love their big girl room and beds, which we just finished. We let them pick out everything and filled it with positive messages for them. They take pride in their room and in growing up.
Tools for Success
Have things in place that will help minimize any negative feelings. For example, a good mattress protector, or even sheet protector is a great idea. They don’t look or feel like anything different and can help with those middle of the night issues that you and your kids dread. Another thing I’ve used with great success are GoodNites TruFit. These are not a diaper-type of product, but rather a soft, fabric underwear that works with disposable protection.
These were perfect for my daughters because they are wearing underwear during the day and INSIST on wearing them at night. But, underwear aren’t offering them any protection and they end up feeling bad when they wet the bed in the middle of the night. That often results in tears and feeling frustrated. GoodNites TruFit allows them to feel confident despite any leaks or accidents.
Schedule
Schedule a trip to the potty before bed and limit the intake of fluids for at least 1 hour before bed. Try to keep a consistent schedule, which will help to establish a good training schedule – and may make nighttime a little easier.
Be Patient
Nighttime training may not happen quickly and some children may need to grow out of nighttime wetting. Teach your child to be patient and not feel badly about his/her self. Show understanding and do not get upset. Products like GoodNites TruFit can help tackle any ongoing isuses while mainting a child’s self-esteem and confidence – and allow them to spend the night out or enjoy vacation without fears.
