Must-Haves for a Calm & Happy Baby

Jun 30, 2015 Stephanie

Thank you to Little Remedies for sponsoring this conversation. I received compensation as well as product in order to facilitate this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When my twins were born, there was a period of time that I had three kids under three. People would often ask me how I kept so calm – and how I got the babies to be calm. Part of it is nature – I found that my twins were naturally easy going and had each other to cuddle against and would often soothe each other with each other’s presence. The other half was how you approach it – I always stayed calm, lots of deep breaths, breaks and help when needed and great products.

There are a lot of ‘must-haves’ for babies – but what about the ones that help keep baby calm & happy? After three littles, these are my go-to products for helping promote a calm and happy baby.

CALM & HAPPY Baby

Swaddles or Sleep Sack

Babies like the feel of a swaddle as it reminds them of the womb  – whether you choose a swaddle sleepsack or a swaddling blanket, you can learn the proper techniques for swaddling a baby safely and effectively to help calm and soothe.

Soothing Sound Machine or Music

There are so many options in this area at all different price points. Whehter you choose a sound machine or download an album with music for sleep – be sure that you have something and consistently use it at rest or bedtime. I always began playing the music or sounds when we had bath or got ready for nap or bed.

Routine and Consistent Schedule

While not tangible, keeping baby on a consistent schedule or routine (where possible) will help you as a parent and the baby to learn what to expect. Sleep should always be consistent and you should try to establish a good bedtime routine – i.e. nursing, bath, massage, book, music, lights out, etc. There is no one right schedule – it is what works best for you and your baby.

Stimulating Toys & Play

Be sure baby is getting the right amount of ‘play’ in. During the younger months, this is as simple as visual stimulation and interaction with mom, dad or other family members. There are so many lists online that will break down baby’s first year by the skills necessary and that will suggest toys and other activities.

Diapering

Whether you choose cloth or disposable, be sure you have the right products on hand to keep baby’s bottom from becoming irritated. Diaper wipes without harsh ingredients and high quality diapers will treat your baby’s skin right – helping to avoid rash and discomfort.  If it does occur, having a good diaper cream is essential for relieving the pain.

Swing or Carrier

I recommend both of these. Smaller babies love being close to their parents or caregivers. A sling or wrap style carrier will allow baby to remain close, happy and feeling safe without having to give up your arms!

A Good Stroller

Make sure you have a comfortable place for baby in a stroller. Aside from a car ride, I found that all my kids loved their time in the stroller. A quick afternoon walk was all my son needed to help him have a long afternoon nap. Making sure you have one that is comfortable and easy to transport and maneuver can be your best friend when baby gets cranky!

Products to Relieve Tummy / Gas Discomfort

Tummy discomfort can be a big reason why baby gets fussy. You don’t want to be without products like Gripe Water or Gas Relief Drops when / if that time comes. I always suggest having Little Remedies Gas Relief Drops and Gripe Water on hand.
