Children are not the only ones who struggle with Daylight Saving Time (DST). I am taking steps to to ensure my kids make the transition without losing sleep, but adults can also struggle during DST. This mamma needs her sleep – and when I don’t get it I find that I’m more forgetful, lacking energy and irritable. And I’m not the only one: More than half of all US adults say their sleep is affected by Daylight Saving Time; for those that say they suffer from occasional sleeplessness, more than 60% cite DST as affecting their sleep.
With such large numbers of people being affected, it’s hard to believe that 81% of US adults do nothing to prepare for this time change. This year, I’m going to be taking steps to make the time change a little less disruptive. I want to ensure I’m not part of the roughly half (48%) of US adults that experience problems due to DST, which include oversleeping, showing up late for work, or losing a personal item such as a wallet, keys or phone. For me, that also includes loss of energy, irritability and headaches.
Here are 5 Tips to Ease into Daylight Savings Time
Early to Bed. In the week before DST, I’ll be hitting the sack 15-20 minutes earlier each night to get ready for the shift.
Hit the Gym. I’m going to be making sure I’m doing vigorous exercise to help my body feel tired – especially in the day or two before the time change – day of and day after. Midday is best, but morning usually works for me.
Put the Screen Down. For the hour before bed, put away the phone, tablet and turn off the TV. Read, take a bath or listen to music. The goal is to wind down. So, shut off those screens.
Don’t Sleep In! Get up at the regular time you always do. Try to get sun within the hour of waking up. It will help set your body’s clock.
Have Zzzquil on hand. ZzzQuil is a non-habit-forming sleep-aid for the relief of occasional sleeplessness that can help you fall asleep soundly and wake up feeling refreshed.
