The work can wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you do the work. – Patricia Clafford
It’s one of my favorite quotes from teaching, a student having given it to me my first year of teaching on a desk accessory. Tucked away in a box of my old teaching things, I found it not too long ago and thought it would be perfect on some sort of teacher gift. With my son starting Kindergarten in a few short weeks, I knew I wanted to include the quote on a gift for his new teacher.
In case you didn’t know – teachers love Sharpies. I couldn’t get enough of them when I was teaching. Fine point, ultra-fine point and all colors. They were perfect for organizing my calendar, writing student labels, nametags, classroom organization, file folders, correcting papers and I could go on and on. They’re vital to an organized classroom!
And what better way to incorporate the idea of the rainbow than with teacher-favorite Sharpies and rainbow candies – all in a great mug for tea or coffee.
What you’ll need:
Graphite Pencil (If you want to transfer over your text)
Paper for Text
Sharpies – Variety of Colors
Write or print your text onto paper. I wanted my mug to have a handwritten look, but you can print out your text before transferring, whichever you prefer.
Rub the back of the text with the graphite pencil and tape the paper (text side up) to the mug in the appropriate placement.
Simply trace over your text with a ballpoint pen and your text will be transferred to your mug for you trace with your Sharpie. It will be light, but you will be able to read and trace.
After you have traced with your Sharpie, allow to dry for at least 12 hours. Finish the cup by baking at 425 – no preheating! – for 3o minutes.
Add in the rainbow candies, the Sharpies, and a little note for the teacher and you’ve got an easy, fun back-to-school gift for your child’s teacher.
Staples, my back-to-school favorite as a teacher and now as a parent, currently has Sharpie Fine and Ultra Fine markers and highlighters on sale, while supplies last, making it easy to gift and stock up on for your back to school needs. I picked up a few packages at Staples for my kids, my son’s teacher’s gift and myself – to keep color coded and organized.
