Cheese. It’s just one of those foods that I love. And naturally, from watching their mamma love it, my kids love their cheese, too! Fortunately, cheese can be a part of a really healthy snack for my kids – and a great playdate snack!

We recently had some friends over for a 2-year-old playdate and having Arla Dofino Havarti on hand was perfect to serve to both the moms and the kiddos. Arla Dofino makes cheeses that include many kid and family friendly cheese flavors like Havarti, Gouda and Fontina. The Havarti, our favorite,  is a very creamy, light cheese. It has a mellow aroma and is soft. It is great melted or perfect paired with crunch like an apple or cracker. The Havarti comes in many varieties like Havarti Dill, Havarti with Caraway and more.

For the kids, I chose to make apple & havarti ‘sandwiches.’ These were were fun and easy for the kids to eat. Simply cut apples of choice into thin slices. Slice cheese and make a neat little sandwich.  You can use any type of apple, but I find the Granny Smith can be out a bit longer without browning.

Apple Tip: Brush a very small amount of lemon juice (fresh or bottled) onto the apple to keep from browning. It doesn’t affect the taste and it keeps the apples preserved a bit longer.

Served with crackers, the kids enjoyed munching on these healthy snacks!

Toddler Tip: Use snack time as a lesson. As a former teacher, I always saw snack time as a time to talk with younger children. Talk about the taste, texture and colors of the foods. Discuss the differences in how the food tastes and feels – crunchy, creamy, sweet, sour etc.

In addition, we used playtime to talk about healthy foods, fruits, and vegetables – sorting the fruits and vegetables by colors – as well as healthy foods vs. treats.

For the moms, it was cheese and crackers – and some lemon-water (a bit too early for some wine, which also pairs SO well with Arla Dofino cheeses!).
