I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Seventh Generation. I received a promotional item and product samples as a thank you for participating.
When our first son was born four years ago, we stopped using typical cleaning products in the home. I didn’t want him around the harsh chemicals that most cleaners contain. I began using products from Seventh Generation and haven’t looked back. From dishwasher detergent, to all-purpose cleaners and wipes, we just knew it was the right thing to do for our family. Now that he has twin sisters, I still strive to use natural products in our home. Still, despite my decision, I realized that I knew little to nothing about the actual reasons why this decision was so important.
The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was passed in 1976. Unlike other environmental laws, it has never been updated. As a result, there are tens of thousands of potentially harmful chemicals used in the marketplace since the 70’s without proper testing. And worst of all, this is without the disclosure by the companies that produce them. Really think about that impact – more than 80,000 chemicals in the US have never been fully tested for their toxic effects on health and environment. To me, it’s startling.
Why address it?
Consider this: Scientists have linked exposure to toxic chemicals to risks such as cancer, alzheimers, learning disabilities and various reproductive problems.

What Can You Do You To Spread Awareness And Get Involved?
I was more than happy to join 7th Generation their Toxin Freedom Fighter Campaign. And you can join, too, to help.
To help, you can sign, as I did, Seventh Generation’s petition to urge congress to reevaluate the Toxic Substances Control Act for the first time since 1976. Seventh Generation wants to make sure that all parents and the public are aware of the 80,000 synthetic chemicals introduced into the market since 1976, and that the EPA has required testing on less than 10%. They want to reach this goal of collecting 100,000 signatures by April 24th. Sign if you support this and urge your family and friends to do the same!
If they reach this goal, Seventh Generation will:
The Toxin Freedom Fighters will deliver the 100,000 collected signatures to Congress on April 30th, 2014. The signatures will strengthen the movement behind chemical reform, and will encourage decision-makers to change the necessary laws. Seventh Generation will spread awareness about the 37 year-old TSCA and starts conversations about how it fails to protect the health of the general public.
