Is Your Family Protected from the Flu? : Tips for Prevention

Nov 25, 2013 Stephanie

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for MedImmune Specialty Care. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.
As a former classroom teacher, I know a thing or two about trying to avoid getting sick during cold and flu season. It’s not easy, but there are a few things I do to try and keep healthy:

1. Wash Hands – I cannot stress this enough, but I consistently wash my hands and I’m mindful of what surfaces I’m touching especially while in public places.

2. Avoid Touching Your Face – I fidget a lot, but I am mindful to avoid touching my eyes, nose, mouth to avoid spreading any germs that may be on my hands to myself.

3. Have Healthy Habits- Get sleep, take your vitamins, eat well…if you’re run down, your immune system will be too. The only year I got the flu was when I had just had twins. Go figure. But, I wasn’t eating properly or sleeping from the sheer exhaustion. My body wasn’t up for the fight at all.

These tips seem to help me – but I’m an adult. What about my kids? I tell my four year old these things and it’s very hard to ensure that he does them. I can make sure he takes his vitamins and eats well, but the rest is difficult for me to constantly monitor, especially when he is at school.

Recently, I checked out Elizabeth Pantley’s ebooklet, “A Parent’s Guide to Flu Season” and found it really helpful as a concerned parent. My son goes to preschool each day and has the potential to bring home lots of germs to his one year old twin sisters. A lot of the information is really important for parents to know – some of it may even set the record straight on flu facts.  I find with the flu, there is a lot of misinformation and this booklet does a great job of clarifying it all.

One thing we do, which the booklet suggests, is get ourselves and our kids the flu shot. When I did get the flu last year, I was warned of the impact the virus could have on my then infant twins if they contracted it.  I had never realized how serious the flu could be for young children. It was a wake up call.

I also talked to my son’s teacher to see if she might like me to donate some good quality tissues. From my teaching days, I know the ones provided in schools can be flimsy. Having a thicker, higher quality tissue can really make a difference. She was happy to accept them for her class, along with a few bottles of quality hand soap for the kids! She does a great job in the classroom of having charts and pictures to help remind the kids. Good prevention is key in keeping everyone healthy.

Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization?
I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good results.
If you know of any please share. Kudos!
