I’m excited to have the chance to participate in another Champions for Kids service project. This month, I was able to purchase healthy snacks for kids for the #Dole4Kids Champions for Kids Campaign.
In the past, I’ve made my donation to our regional food bank, which successfully delivers food and toiletries to smaller food banks throughout our county. This month, I decided to change it up a little since it’s back-to-school time. From my days as a school counselor, I was aware of the Resource Center of Somerset County, NJ. I know that there are many displaced children living in their facility (both safe house and transitional housing). Going back to school is so hard for a child who has had his/her life turned upside down.
This non-profit organization is dedicated to serving those impacted by domestic violence. They assist individuals in attaining immediate assistance and help victims and their children on the road to recovery. Some of their services include emergency/ safe housing, legal advocates, counseling, transitional housing, and crisis response teams. They do this all, as they have done for 30 years, providing services to women, men and children free of charge.
I got started by checking their donation needs list online. I wanted my donation to have the best impact. I gathered together some household and baby items to donate, since these were a need. Then, we shopped at Walmart for Dole Fruit Bowls and new Dole Squish’ems, as well as school supplies and some toiletries. Fruit snacks, healthy snacks and school supplies were all listed on the center’s wish list – so I felt good that I would be contributing what was really needed.
You can see some more pictures from my shop at Walmart over on my Google+ Album.
In an effort to increase the donation, I decided to ask the members of my Moms of Twins/Multiples Organization for help. I provided them the information about what I was doing and what items would be helpful, like Dole Fruit Bowls and Squish’ems. I asked them to bring them, in lieu of bringing refreshments or desserts to our general meeting. My fellow moms of twins and multipes came through and helped me build up the donation.
I took the items to a former co-worker of mine who is involved in the Resource Center and I knew she’d get the items exactly where they needed to go.
