With Thanksgiving less than a week away, I’ve started to clear out the fall seasonal decor (goodbye much loved pumpkind and mums!) and I’ve got my sights set on Christmas decor. Decorating the outside of your home is the first thing your guests will see all season long – so it’s fun to make it welcoming.
Tips for Decorating Outdoors
Keep it Simple
Choose one large scale item and keep everything else simple. I chose these lit deer and doe set from Big Lots. What I love most about them is they are beautiful during the day, as well as at night. For now, they are on the porch with the other decor while we finish up some yardwork. Later, they’ll look pretty “grazing” out on the lawn. For other decor, stick with garland, Christmas wreaths (on windows, fences and mailboxes). Highlight it all with white lights, which help keep things looking fresh and classic.
Put a Spotlight On It
One of the easiest ways to highlight your home for the holiday is with a door spotlight. Buy a beautiful wreath from Big Lots and your whole home will stand out at night with a spotlight on it. I picked up a simple LED Spotlight from Big Lots, too. They truly have everything you need to prepare your home for the season.
Create a Festive “Nook”
I have one spot on my porch where I love to create a nook for that season. Christmas decorations are the most fun to work with! If the area is covered, like mine is, you’ll be able to keep pillows, throws or other items outside to complete the look. Not only does Big Lots become your go-to for all indoor holiday needs, but your outdoor as well. I picked up the prelit mini tree, welcome mat, JOY sign and pillow there.
I have window boxes on the front of my home and for years, I paid a lot of money to put fresh garland and juniper in the boxes, only to have to toss it in a month. This year, I purchased these wall decorations from Big Lots. Two of them together fill a window box perfectly and they look real! Best of all, you can reuse them year to year. I also grabbed a few plan wreaths to hang on our windows.
Lights, Lights, Lights!
As I mentioned before, I love white lights during the holiday season. I think it just elevates the whole look of your Christmas decor. Some tips:
- Plan out how many boxes you’ll need to make things easier. Count the number of trees or shrubs nd estimate how many strings of lights you’ll need to cover it.
- Always buy an extra box.
- Pick up a timer and switch for your lights at Big Lots. You can plug everything in to this one location and set it all to go on and off at a certain time.
- Consider net lights (such a timesaver!!) for lower shrubs. I have round boxwoods in the front of our home and the net lights drape right over them. Done and done!
- Enjoy your work. Wait until night — step back and adjust any gaps or areas that need more coverage while you can see the lit areas.
Shop Big Lots
These few tips are just the start. There’s much more decorating ideas that Big Lots has in store. You can check more off of your list and get great quality, name brands and trend right items — all at a great value.
On my most recent trip there, I found aisles and aisles of holiday decor, both indoor and out.
I had to devote this particular trip to outdoor decor and knew I’d be back to tackle the indoors.
They organize the store so well, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.
And when there were no more of the lit deer and doe sets, an employee was in the section for me to ask (without having to look for anyone) and he happily got a few down for me from an upper shelf. The employees make the difference – with everyone asking how you are or if you need help finding anything.
