Having a blog can be a lot of work. When it comes to routinely posting, the photography, updates and managing web design – you have to take the time to cover all your bases. Twice a year, I sit down and really think about some things I can do to refresh the site. Sometimes, I have bigger things to accomplish (like my recent redesign) and sometimes the things are smaller.
Here are 10 Ways to Refresh Your Blog
Change your About Page
Take a look at your bio and about page and update the information. Make sure the information there matches what is current. I had once discovered my about page still said I had new twins when my girls were over a year old. Time passes quickly, so taking the time to refresh that information will keep things current.
While you’re revamping that bio, think about getting a new headshot. Don’t have the money for a professional one (which is on my spring to do list!) then have a friend or family member help you take one. Resist the urge to use an outdated photo, especially if you attend a lot of blogger events. You’ll be surprised that people do know you by your bio picture, so keep it real!
Check the ease of navigating your site. Are you happy with the menu bars, drop down menus and categories. Make sure it is easy to find what your reader is looking for.
It can be as simple as a new header, a new graphics, fonts or logo – or it can be an entire new design. Look at your blog and what it says about your work, writing and yourself. Make sure it all fits together. Prior to my blog redesign, I completed a mood board of pictures, fonts, colors and designs that I really liked. It helped give me and my designer a direction for the ‘feel’ of the site.
Clean Up Your Sidebars
Make sure buttons and ads are up to date. Get rid of anything outdated and try to organize things in a user friendly way. i.e. recent posts, search bar, social media icons, etc.
Make sure that great post or recipe will be shared. Have an easy way for people to share! Social share buttons at the top, bottom or at the sides of your posts will make it easier for people to share what they like!
Check into Analytics
Make sure you are following your analytics so you know if it’s working properly. start to understand wher eyour traffic is coming from/ popular posts, etc. This will help you be a better blogger.
Check out your Social Media Profiles
As an extension of your blog, make sure they flow well. With this last redesign, I have consistent logos on each of the pages and kept the design & headshot the same.
Get an Editorial Calendar
If you’re looking to take your blog to a new level, consider getting more organized. Use a paper planner, or an online system for keeping track of your goals, events and posting ideas.
The Right Host
Blogs are all different. Perhaps you are on a free platflorm, but if you find yourself redesigning or making the leap to a self-hosted platform, you’ll need a great host, like HostGator.
If you already have one but aren’t happy, I highly recommend HostGator. I’ve used HostGator since I made the switch from Blogger to WordPress and I couldn’t be happier. When you work with a lot of brands and have due dates that are time sensitive, a blog that is down is not okay. I’ve rarely had difficulties, but when I did, I found the customer service options to be amazing – there’s always someone ready to help. You can’t do it all yourself, so I feel confident having HostGator in my corner.
